Obtain Straighter, Healthier Teeth with Traditional Braces
At Rockwall Family Dentistry, we provide traditional braces for adults, kids, and teens in the Rockwall, TX-area. Braces are a great option to straighten teeth, improving both dental function and aesthetics. Additionally, by shifting teeth into their optimal positions, orthodontia can prevent future oral health concerns. We offer standard metal braces, but for a more discreet option, you could select porcelain brackets which are matched to the natural shade of your smile. Our team provides personalized care during all stages of treatment. We will conduct a complete exam to determine the most appropriate orthodontic option for you. We will also provide tips to help you maintain your braces as well as monitor your treatment, making adjustments as needed for truly successful care.
Who Is a Candidate for Traditional Braces?
Traditional braces are appropriate for patients suffering from many types of dental misalignment. If you are struggling with any of the following problems, braces may be a good option:
- Gapped teeth
- Rotated teeth
- Teeth that are tipped forward
- Open bite
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
Both adults and teens can benefit from braces. In some cases, we may also recommend interceptive orthodontics for young children. By correcting misalignment during the early stages of dental development, we can reduce the severity of these problems and shorten overall treatment time.
Rockwall Family Dentistry also proudly offers Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen®, as well as standard braces. Invisalign® is very subtle and can correct many of the same concerns as traditional orthodontic appliances. However, if you have severe misalignment, braces may be more appropriate. Dr. Morrison will make a well-considered recommendation during your initial consultation.
How Do Traditional Braces Work?
The concept behind braces is simple, yet highly effective. We will attach metal or porcelain brackets to each tooth. Then we will run a ligature wire between them, using a rubber band to connect it to the brackets. The wire will place a gentle pressure across the entire dental arch, which will gradually cause your teeth to shift.
You or your child will need to come in for regular checkups every six to eight weeks. At these visits, we will monitor your progress and gently tighten the wire. Braces could remain on your teeth anywhere from six months to two years. The duration of your care will largely depend on the initial degree of misalignment.
Orthodontic treatment can have transformative effects, as well as important health benefits.
In addition to making regular dental visits, there are several other things you should do to maintain your braces and protect your oral health. For example, you should avoid certain foods, such as whole apples, since biting down on them can damage your orthodontic appliance.
Additionally, during the course of your treatment, you should not eat foods with small pieces. Popcorn, seeds, and similar items can become stuck under the wires, increasing your risk for discoloration and decay. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash are also very important.
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment can have transformative effects. First and perhaps most noticeably, you or your child will have a more attractive and healthier-looking smile. As an adult, you may look several years younger, or your teen could have a more mature appearance. Either way, an attractive smile can transform your face, often leading to a greater sense of confidence.
Traditional braces have important health benefits. First, you will have a lower risk for cavities, since food can no longer become trapped between overlapping teeth. Braces can reduce your risk for TMJ disorder. By correcting overall bite misalignment, we can redistribute force across your bite and alleviate pressure in your jaw joints. Orthodontic care can also reduce the likelihood of dental erosion and weakening of your teeth.
