Alleviate Pain with Custom TMJ Disorder Treatment
At Rockwall Family Dentistry, we understand the significant toll that TMJ disorder (TMD) can take on your life. The inflammation in your jaw can radiate across your face and into other parts of your body. The constant pain can make it difficult to eat. TMD can also be emotionally draining. With a compassionate approach and complete understanding of this condition, Dr. Melina Cozby offers several different TMJ disorder treatments at our Rockwall, TX, dental practice. We are dedicated to using the latest and most effective treatment options. Oral appliance therapy is a common option since the devices are small, conservative, and affordable. We also proudly offer TruDenta® therapy. Taking a whole-body approach, this treatment uses various modalities to achieve long-lasting pain relief.
Easing TMJ Disorder Symptoms
Through our comprehensive care, we can reduce or eliminate many of the symptoms of TMD. Jaw pain is the most common complaint, although it will affect different patients in different ways. Some may have pain in only one side of their jaws, while others may experience inflammation in both temporomandibular joints. Other symptoms of TMD include:
- Jaw stiffness
- Ear pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Pain when chewing
- A popping or clicking noise that accompanies jaw movement
- Problems opening or closing the mouth all the way
Oral Appliances for TMD
Oral appliances are simple and affordable. At the same time, they can dramatically ease jaw inflammation and related symptoms. Our team will take impressions of your teeth so that our lab can create your custom device. This secure and comfortable appliance will serve two purposes. First, it will keep your teeth from touching. This is important since bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding, is a leading cause of TMD.
Second, the oral appliance will gently reposition your lower jaw reducing pressure on your jaw joints, eliminating inflammation, and giving the nearby tissues a chance to heal. If you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, an oral appliance can treat this condition simultaneously. By pushing your lower jaw forward, the device will open your airways.
Advanced TruDenta® Therapy
Jaw inflammation can also affect your head, neck, and shoulders. For this reason, we proudly offer TruDenta® therapy. This system combines some of the most advanced treatment methods. It allows Dr. Cozby to create fully personalized treatment plans that can ease pain across your upper body. We will begin by examining your facial muscles and analyzing your bite with our T-scan® system. This imaging device will show exactly where your bite has the greatest amount of force and where your jaw joints may face the most pressure.
Your treatment will take place in one hour sessions performed weekly for up to 12 weeks. You may notice dramatic results after just one session.
Based on your particular symptoms and oral structure, we will then determine the right approach to your care. It could include ultrasound therapy and cold laser stimulation, as well as manual massage to release trigger points. These treatments will take place in one hour sessions performed weekly for up to 12 weeks. You may notice dramatic results after just one session. For optimal results, it is important to follow through with your entire treatment regimen. We can also teach you exercises to perform at home, which may speed up the healing process.
